In Virginia, we enjoy incredible water resources with more than 100,000 miles of streams and rivers, over one million acres of freshwater and coastal wetlands, more than 240 publicly owned lakes, and over 120 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline. But there are also diverse and dynamic demands on the Commonwealth’s water resources – ranging from the protection of aquatic life and creating recreation opportunities, to accounting for public consumption as well as the needs of industry. To meet the demands on Virginia waters, we have to work towards both protecting these resources and managing the varying uses for them.
