Blue Carbon as Natural Infrastructure: Funding Protection and Restoration of Coastal Habitats

July 29, 2025 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join The Pew Charitable Trusts for a Blue Carbon Network webinar in which participants will hear from leading experts on financing coastal habitat protection and restoration.

Blue carbon habitats—such as tidal marshes, seagrasses, and mangroves—play a critical role in sequestering carbon, buffering storm impacts, supporting wildlife, and improving water quality. Reliable financing is essential to protecting these habitats; without such investment, there can be major barriers between idea generation and project implementation. As funding landscapes change rapidly, blue carbon practitioners benefit from understanding the full range of opportunities across private and public sectors.

Speakers will discuss Maryland’s groundbreaking Conservation Finance Act and pay-for-success program, Duke University’s project registry for nature-based solutions, and Louisiana’s carbon credit feasibility assessment. Specifically, they’ll explore and discuss:

  • State and local initiatives to finance protection and restoration of coastal habitats.
  • Ways to leverage private investments for nature-based solutions.
  • Carbon credits as a funding mechanism for coastal restoration.
  • Strategies for aligning public and private investment to maximize impact and durability.
