SUMMARY:Dig Into Wetlands Workshop Series: Hydric Soil
DESCRIPTION:Join Rowen Schmidt\, a wetland delineator with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\, for an immersive exploration of the wetlands! Discover the fascinating ecology of the Tidewater Region’s salt marshes and gain hands-on experience learning about how climate\, geology\, and other factors shape these vital ecosystems. \nThis is a unique opportunity to get your hands dirty—literally! Participants will be provided gloves and are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes or boots\, as a muddy adventure awaits. \nRowen Schmidt is a wetland delineator with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers where they work with the Clean Water Act. They have led environmental education programs since 2017 and enjoy working at the intersection of science\, policy\, and public resources. \nWorkshop Three: Hydric Soil – August 16 @ 10am: Explore a unique type of soil that forms in areas with long-term water presence. Waterlogged conditions remove oxygen from the soil\, leading to fascinating changes. By examining these changes\, you’ll learn about indicators of hydric soils. With tools like soil probes and shovels\, we’ll investigate wet soils\, looking for distinctive clues like manganese nodules or redox patterns. We’ll also compare these findings to drier areas\, study soil types like sandy and loamy\, and test how soil reacts during specific experiments. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Environmental Law Institute: Data Centers and Water Usage
DESCRIPTION:Demand for data centers is surging\, and with it\, concerns about their impact on water resources. A single data center can consume an average of over 300\,000 gallons of water each day for cooling\, which is equivalent to water use in 100\,000 homes. New facilities are being built at unprecedented scale to accommodate AI’s computing demands\, and many are popping up in regions already facing high levels of water stress. These trends raise serious questions and concerns about long-term water availability\, infrastructure resilience\, and the communities living alongside these operations. \nThis webinar will bring together experts to explore how data centers use water and the policy strategies available to manage their growing footprint. How much water do data centers really consume? What cooling methods are used\, and what options exist for water-efficient cooling? What are the legal\, policy\, and research tools needed to manage growing water use and ensure responsible infrastructure planning? \nJoin the Environmental Law Institute and the Network for the Digital Economy and Environment for a timely conversation with leading experts to discuss these questions and many more! \nPanelists:\nTim Mealey\, Co-founder and Advisor\, Network for the Digital Economy and Environment\, Moderator\nLandon Marston\, Associate Professor\, Virginia Tech\nOliver Browne\, California Regional Director\, WestWater Research\nSarah Houston\, Executive Director\, Protect our Aquifer \n  \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Blue Carbon as Natural Infrastructure: Funding Protection and Restoration of Coastal Habitats
DESCRIPTION:Join The Pew Charitable Trusts for a Blue Carbon Network webinar in which participants will hear from leading experts on financing coastal habitat protection and restoration. \nBlue carbon habitats—such as tidal marshes\, seagrasses\, and mangroves—play a critical role in sequestering carbon\, buffering storm impacts\, supporting wildlife\, and improving water quality. Reliable financing is essential to protecting these habitats; without such investment\, there can be major barriers between idea generation and project implementation. As funding landscapes change rapidly\, blue carbon practitioners benefit from understanding the full range of opportunities across private and public sectors. \nSpeakers will discuss Maryland’s groundbreaking Conservation Finance Act and pay-for-success program\, Duke University’s project registry for nature-based solutions\, and Louisiana’s carbon credit feasibility assessment. Specifically\, they’ll explore and discuss: \n\nState and local initiatives to finance protection and restoration of coastal habitats.\nWays to leverage private investments for nature-based solutions.\nCarbon credits as a funding mechanism for coastal restoration.\nStrategies for aligning public and private investment to maximize impact and durability.\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Grasses\, Sedges and Rushes
DESCRIPTION:Identification of grasses\, sedges and rushes is often perceived as one of the most difficult activities in the realm of botany. This is due to many factors\, the most prominent of which are that grasses\, sedges\, and rushes (i.e.\, “the graminoids”) are usually small\, narrow-leaved plants with unassuming\, diminutive flowers – and they all look alike! Even more disconcerting\, the “language” surrounding graminoid botany seems like an insurmountable pile of un-pronounceable Latin words with no end in sight. This course with Dr. Douglas DeBerry is for the disgruntled multitudes who would like to gain a better understanding of grass\, sedge and rush terminology\, classification\, nomenclature and most importantly\, identification. In addition\, those already proficient in plant identification will find this course to be a useful refresher. Emphasis is on native or naturalized species in Virginia\, and the use of dichotomous keys in technical plant manuals and regional floras. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Protecting the Rappahannock River
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Virginia and Brent Hunsinger from Friends of the Rappahannock on July 17th at 7pm EST for an informative webinar! \nThe Rappahannock River was named one of the Most Endangered Rivers of 2025 by American Rivers. The Rappahannock River is under threat as groundwater supplies decline and demand for surface water grows from industrial and residential usage. \nIn this session we will hear how partners are coming together to protect the river as increased strain on water resources and the absence of unified water management threaten the river’s ability to meet the needs of both people and nature. \nBrent Hunsinger serves as Advocacy and Coastal Programs Director at Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR). He has worked at FOR for 9 years and manages state/local policy and restoration/outreach programs in the tidal region (Fredericksburg to the Chesapeake Bay). In his free time he enjoys roaming the forests and wetlands (especially in winter) and fishing for striped bass. \nRegister here!
