SUMMARY:Fossil Frenzy Hike
DESCRIPTION:Long before there was a York River State Park\, or even a York River\, 6\,000 plus years ago\, marine creatures swam here in a shallow sea. Early whales\, porpoises\, sharks\, clams\, scallops\, and snails all left traces of their existence which we now find as fossils. SUMMARY:Invasive Species: Understanding The Problem & Finding Ways to Address The Issue Together
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chesapeake Bay Trust for a robust conversation about invasive species—learn what common invaders we see across the watershed and the problem they pose\, how invasive species are regulated\, what maintenance practices have worked\, what hasn’t worked\, and how we can manage invasives properly through action and education. The focus of this conversation will be on vegetative invasive species; however\, we acknowledge that there are other invasive organisms that threaten our environment and economy that could be worthy of their own conversation. Our goal is to have a more holistic understanding of the problem and come away from the discussion with new management perspectives and techniques. The Chesapeake Bay Trust aims to leave this discussion with ideas we can implement into our grant-making to improve project sustainability and hope that attendees will gain the same. \nRegistration: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZItdeCvrDsrHN14Ux00ch0RaJHx1et_Zwwf \nView the current agenda and list of confirmed speakers: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1h_T336K25p75HL048YfuP-kLbBqBE0C3dBgUuX86d9Y/edit?usp=sharing \nIf you have any questions about the event\, reach out to Whitney Vong at wvong@cbtrust.org. \n

SUMMARY:What Can States Do To Protect Wetlands?
DESCRIPTION:With the May 2023 Sackett v. EPA ruling significantly weakening the Clean Water Act (CWA)\, States are left playing defense when it comes to protecting wetlands. Nearly half of States use the CWA definition for Waters of the United States (WOTUS)\, and anything that isn’t a WOTUS is now vulnerable to pollution and destruction. Join NCEL and Earthjustice for a panel discussion where we’ll cover: (1) the context and decision of Sackett v. EPA\, and (2) what policy options exist to help restore protections for one of the most important ecosystems\, to ensure clean water for future generations. \n  \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:PFAS\, Sociodemographic Factors and Implications for Communities and Environmental Justice
DESCRIPTION:As awareness continues to grow around the negative health effects from exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)\, researchers are working to advance understanding of which communities are most at risk. People may be exposed to different types of PFAS through different routes of exposure including PFAS contaminated drinking water\, workplaces\, and even diet. In some cases\, these exposures may originate from contamination at airports\, military sites\, industrial facilities\, landfills\, or wastewater treatment plants. Recent studies have shown that exposure to PFAS can vary with sociodemographic factors\, and understanding these factors can help in assessing risk and better addressing community needs.\n\nJoin the AAAS EPI Center to learn from a panel of experts who will discuss the scientific evidence of PFAS exposure and sociodemographic factors\, impacts to communities\, and implications for environmental justice. SUMMARY:Woodland Stewardship Network Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join this 3-hour webinar to learn about Woodland Stewardship Networks\, an approach to advancing forest stewardship and active management among private forest landowners by focusing outreach and assistance to “Networks” of neighboring properties. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay piloted the approach in 2017 and has since assisted scores of landowners in Pennsylvania\, Maryland\, and Virginia in getting updated forest management plans and beginning active stewardship on thousands of acres of woodland. Woodland Stewardship Networks have proven to be an effective and efficient way of reaching private forest landowners and helping them towards forest stewardship\, no matter their property size. The webinar will include case studies and panels from consulting foresters and governmental agency partners who have worked with the program. \nRegistration and more information here.

DESCRIPTION:Join VIMS at the Copper Fox Distillery in Williamsburg as Director of VIMS’ Eastern Shore Laboratory in Wachapreague\, Dr. Richard Snyder\, celebrates the importance of shellfish in our region. \nOysters\, clams\, mussels\, and scallops have a rich cultural\, economic\, and scientific history in coastal Virginia\, from the native Americans to modern aquaculture. Dr. Snyder\, originally from the Eastern Shore of Maryland and now Director of the VIMS Wachapreague Lab\, will pull together elements of this history into compelling stories centered on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Understanding the backstory of your seafood will perhaps add a deeper dimension of enjoyment and appreciation of these delectable critters. \nFollowing the presentation\, VIMS outreach staff will have a shellfish-centered exhibit for you to interact with including microscopes\, information\, and more! \nMore information here.

SUMMARY:CRC Roundtable – Shifting to The Shallows: Informed Site Selection
DESCRIPTION:One of the core conclusions of the Comprehensive Evaluation of System Response (CESR) report is that there is great potential and urgency in the restoration of shallow water areas; they are the places where many of our favorite Bay species live and reproduce as well as where most people interact with the Bay. With so many people living along waterways\, a focus on shallow waters is also a focus on our communities. How do we prioritize shallow water restoration sites in terms of impact on the Bay restoration effort and people in the watershed? \n  \nMore information and registration here.
