SUMMARY:Utilizing the State Intended Use Plan to Elevate Unfunded Applications
DESCRIPTION:As receiving funding for water and wastewater systems becomes increasingly more competitive\, the number of unfunded applications also increases. Often these are proactive systems that operate well and maintain high water quality with minor deficiencies but have significant infrastructure needs in the next 5 years that don’t often score well under state prioritization criteria. The question becomes “How can we assist these communities in elevating their application\, telling the narrative of their needs within the application to increase the likelihood of being awarded funding?” This webinar will primarily focus on pre-planning applications and how RCAP can assist the communities with submitting a more competitive application to State Revolving Funds. DESCRIPTION:Join the Copper Fox Distillery in Williamsburg as VIMS Acoustician Dustin Gregg discusses a monumental equipment upgrade aboard the R/V Virginia that has allowed scientists from VIMS to explore the historical waters of Chesapeake Bay and has provided a new platform for interdisciplinary marine research in the Mid-Atlantic. While exploiting the properties of sound waves in the marine environment is not a new concept\, Gregg explains how these acoustic instruments stand in a class of their own regarding accuracy and application\, and how they have enabled VIMS to serve the scientific community in exiting new ways. Come learn how underwater sound is used to inform us on various aquatic environments\, the fascinating theory of operation of these instruments\, see 3D visualizations of historic Chesapeake Bay shipwrecks captured from the R/V Virginia\, and maybe even walk away with a better understanding of your own boat’s “fishfinder”. \nLearn more here.

DESCRIPTION:Did you know that sea stars\, urchins\, and sand dollars are all related? Echinoderms are spine covered marine animals with crazy anatomy. They have no backbone\, no brain\, radial symmetry\, and\, many are predators in the intertidal zone. Join us at the March Lab where Dr. Jonathan Allen will present on these fascinating animals and talk about his research. Activity stations for this Discovery Lab will be designed and run by the middle schoolers of Williamsburg Montessori School. \nDiscovery Labs are free\, family-friendly programs provided each month by the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERR-VA) at VIMS. Designed with elementary-aged youth and their parents in mind\, each lab focuses on a different topic related to the Chesapeake Bay and our local environment and includes exhibits\, demonstrations\, and hands-on activities as well as a short presentation (from 6:30-7:00 PM) by an expert on the topic. DESCRIPTION:CBNERR-VA is bringing the shore to you! Learn all about the importance of beaches and barrier islands. These places that we love to visit in the summer protect our coasts\, provide habitat for all sorts of critters\, store carbon\, and even migrate! To find out how\, we’ll hear from graduate student Mary Bryan Barksdale as she talks about her research and the reasons barrier island systems fascinate her. \nDiscovery Labs are free\, family-friendly programs provided each month by the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERR-VA) at VIMS. Designed with elementary-aged youth and their parents in mind\, each lab focuses on a different topic related to the Chesapeake Bay and our local environment and includes exhibits\, demonstrations\, and hands-on activities as well as a short presentation (from 6:30-7:00 PM) by an expert on the topic. DESCRIPTION:Phil Farina from Clear Creek Systems\, a firm specializing in water treatment\, will join Brent Walls\, Upper Potomac Riverkeeper\, in speaking about treatment and destruction technologies for PFAS\, a group of toxic “forever chemicals” that are found throughout our homes and environment. PRKN has been advocating for more public information about PFAS risks and what we can do and state agencies can do to reduce public health risks; an untapped resource could be technologies to remove and most importantly to destroy PFAS.
