SUMMARY:CBNERR-VA Discovery Lab - Bye-Bye Bycatch
DESCRIPTION:What do dolphins\, sea turtles\, whales\, and sea birds all have in common? In April\, our Discovery Lab will be all about keeping marine animals safe while fishing. Test out your skills building bycatch reduction devices in fun engineering challenges or learn about what technologies keep fish in nets and turtles out. Derek Jackson will talk about his research on bycatch reduction in Pacific halibut fisheries on the West Coast of the United States. Come join us to find out more! Register here. \nDiscovery Labs are free\, family-friendly programs provided each month by the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERR-VA) at VIMS. Designed with elementary-aged youth and their parents in mind\, each lab focuses on a different topic related to the Chesapeake Bay and our local environment and includes exhibits\, demonstrations\, and hands-on activities as well as a short presentation (from 6:30-7:00 PM) by an expert on the topic.

SUMMARY:The Solar Situation: The state of the science and the industry
DESCRIPTION:Solar energy is becoming less expensive and more efficient. However\, the utility-scale solar panel installations being proposed and installed around the Mid-Atlantic region will transform land characteristics. Currently\, guidance and understanding of best practices relating to the land development and management of solar installations in the Chesapeake Bay region is unclear. What is the state of science\, what are current best management practices\, and where are the opportunities for improving recommendations? Register here!

SUMMARY:Incorporating Climate and Environmental Justice into Research and Resource Management
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Conservation Training Center\, the U.S. Geological Survey National Climate Adaptation Science Center (NCASC) invites all audiences interested in the intersection between climate and environmental justice and environmental research to join them every other Thursday (3-4 PM ET) from Feb. 29 – May 9\, 2024\, for the webinar series “Incorporating Climate and Environmental Justice into Research and Resource Management.” REGISTER HERE! \nIn this series\, speakers will explore the ethics of engaging with the populations most vulnerable to the impacts of environmental and climate change\, which are often low-income communities\, communities of color\, Indigenous and Tribal communities\, and people experiencing disenfranchisement. They hope the series will be of particular value to researchers looking to apply justice principles to their own work and communities seeking to lay out clear expectations for the researchers they collaborate with. Webinars will be recorded\, transcribed\, and made available on the NCASC website a few weeks after the live event. \nLearn more about the series on the NCASC website: https://www.usgs.gov/webinar-series-incorporating-climate-and-environmental-justice-research-and-resource-management

SUMMARY:Webinar: Updates to the Bay Act Resiliency Guidance
DESCRIPTION:The Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act (Bay Act) and accompanying Regulations were amended to address resiliency in the performance criteria required to be implemented by the 84 Tidewater localities under the Bay Act. An informal comment on the proposed guidance was previously held in December of 2022. \nThe draft guidance has been updated based upon comments received during the prior informal comments period\, in particular revisions to accompanying examples. Additionally\, a model ordinance\, a locality implementation checklist\, a resiliency assessment template\, an adaptation measure checklist\, and a list of nature-based adaptation measures have been developed. \nPrior to finalizing the guidance and these additional documents\, DEQ is providing for an informal comment period opportunity. \nThe informal comment period is from March 19\, 2024\, to May 3\, 2024. Any comments should be submitted to Heather.Mackey@deq.virginia.gov and include name\, organization represented (if any)\, mailing address and/or email address. \nAdditionally\, a webinar co-hosted with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science is being held on April 3rd at 10:00 a.m to provide an overview of the updates\, additional documents\, and AdaptVa model for use in resiliency assessments. For additional information about the webinar\, please contact Heather.Mackey@deq.virginia.gov.

SUMMARY:Utilizing the State Intended Use Plan to Elevate Unfunded Applications
DESCRIPTION:As receiving funding for water and wastewater systems becomes increasingly more competitive\, the number of unfunded applications also increases. Often these are proactive systems that operate well and maintain high water quality with minor deficiencies but have significant infrastructure needs in the next 5 years that don’t often score well under state prioritization criteria. The question becomes “How can we assist these communities in elevating their application\, telling the narrative of their needs within the application to increase the likelihood of being awarded funding?” This webinar will primarily focus on pre-planning applications and how RCAP can assist the communities with submitting a more competitive application to State Revolving Funds. SUMMARY:A Scientist Walks into a Distillery: Acoustic Exploration of Chesapeake Bay and Beyond!
DESCRIPTION:Join the Copper Fox Distillery in Williamsburg as VIMS Acoustician Dustin Gregg discusses a monumental equipment upgrade aboard the R/V Virginia that has allowed scientists from VIMS to explore the historical waters of Chesapeake Bay and has provided a new platform for interdisciplinary marine research in the Mid-Atlantic. While exploiting the properties of sound waves in the marine environment is not a new concept\, Gregg explains how these acoustic instruments stand in a class of their own regarding accuracy and application\, and how they have enabled VIMS to serve the scientific community in exiting new ways. Come learn how underwater sound is used to inform us on various aquatic environments\, the fascinating theory of operation of these instruments\, see 3D visualizations of historic Chesapeake Bay shipwrecks captured from the R/V Virginia\, and maybe even walk away with a better understanding of your own boat’s “fishfinder”. \nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:CBNERR-VA Discovery Lab - The Spiny World of Echinoderms
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that sea stars\, urchins\, and sand dollars are all related? Echinoderms are spine covered marine animals with crazy anatomy. They have no backbone\, no brain\, radial symmetry\, and\, many are predators in the intertidal zone. Join us at the March Lab where Dr. Jonathan Allen will present on these fascinating animals and talk about his research. Activity stations for this Discovery Lab will be designed and run by the middle schoolers of Williamsburg Montessori School. \nDiscovery Labs are free\, family-friendly programs provided each month by the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERR-VA) at VIMS.
