SUMMARY:Enhancing Credibility in Your Community Science Project
DESCRIPTION:Participatory science uses the collective strength and knowledge of the public to collect\, analyze\, and use data to answer environmental and public health questions. The goal of most community-driven programs is to ensure that data of known quality are generated to answer local\, regional\, and national questions. Documenting quality assurance activities for environmental projects allows the data collector and user to be more confident in using the generated data by assuring that values are reproducible\, representative\, comparable\, and complete. From equipment testing to study design to developing quality assurance project plans\, this webinar will explore tools and resources to enhance the credibility of your community monitoring science project. SUMMARY:Enhancing soil health and rewilding our landscapes one stream at a time
DESCRIPTION:Stream and floodplain restoration has become a billion-dollar industry in the United States (US) and is a popular management practice in the mid-Atlantic US. Floodplains are being restored to enhance hydrologic connectivity\, reduce sediment erosion\, and enhance runoff nitrogen removal via processes like denitrification. While these restorations have yielded important water quality benefits\, much of the restoration focus is on enhancing stream form and function and very little attention is given to soil health on the restored floodplains. Compacted soils and poor soil conditions can undermine ecosystem functions and services and prevent the restoration from attaining its full potential. In this webinar\, we will discuss how floodplain soil health can be protected and enhanced and present specific strategies and practices that need to be implemented. Healthy soils and floodplains will not only provide valuable water quality and aquatic habitat benefits\, but will also contribute towards rewilding our landscapes and improving human health. SUMMARY:Seed Bombs For The Buffer Zone- Earth Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:Stop by Beaverdam Park and make a seed bomb to drop in the buffer zone. What is a seed bomb? It’s a mixture of soil\, air dry clay and wildflower seeds. You mix them together\, then toss them into the lake buffer zone that we are building to fight erosion. Join the fun and help us protect the lake’s shoreline. While supplies last. No registration required. Presented by Gloucester Clean Community \nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:VIMS After Hours: Monitoring PFAS\, the Toxic "Forever Chemical"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the April After Hours lecture\, where VIMS alum Don Axelrad will be sharing information on his post-graduate career researching and monitoring PFAS: a group of “forever chemicals” who have earned that name because they are nearly indestructible toxins that can cause major health problems in humans. Don will be describing his work on PFAS monitoring in Florida\, where he currently resides; as well as promoting a discussion of what we should do about the issue and what new thinking we should consider when trying to mitigate the effects of PFAs and improve US toxics legislation. \nRegistration is required; register here. \nAfter Hours lectures are designed for an adult audience. We are excited to offer this lecture in-person in McHugh Auditorium on VIMS’ Gloucester Point Campus! This lecture will also be available as a live-streamed webinar. Registration is required for both in-person and webinar attendees. Webinar links will be sent in all registration confirmation emails. At this time\, we are expecting a hybrid event\, but registrants will be notified in advance if the event moves to a virtual only format.

SUMMARY:CBNERR-VA Discovery Lab - Bye-Bye Bycatch
DESCRIPTION:What do dolphins\, sea turtles\, whales\, and sea birds all have in common? In April\, our Discovery Lab will be all about keeping marine animals safe while fishing. Test out your skills building bycatch reduction devices in fun engineering challenges or learn about what technologies keep fish in nets and turtles out. Derek Jackson will talk about his research on bycatch reduction in Pacific halibut fisheries on the West Coast of the United States. Come join us to find out more! Register here. \nDiscovery Labs are free\, family-friendly programs provided each month by the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERR-VA) at VIMS. Designed with elementary-aged youth and their parents in mind\, each lab focuses on a different topic related to the Chesapeake Bay and our local environment and includes exhibits\, demonstrations\, and hands-on activities as well as a short presentation (from 6:30-7:00 PM) by an expert on the topic.

SUMMARY:The Solar Situation: The state of the science and the industry
DESCRIPTION:Solar energy is becoming less expensive and more efficient. However\, the utility-scale solar panel installations being proposed and installed around the Mid-Atlantic region will transform land characteristics. Currently\, guidance and understanding of best practices relating to the land development and management of solar installations in the Chesapeake Bay region is unclear. What is the state of science\, what are current best management practices\, and where are the opportunities for improving recommendations? Register here!

SUMMARY:Incorporating Climate and Environmental Justice into Research and Resource Management
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Conservation Training Center\, the U.S. Geological Survey National Climate Adaptation Science Center (NCASC) invites all audiences interested in the intersection between climate and environmental justice and environmental research to join them every other Thursday (3-4 PM ET) from Feb. 29 – May 9\, 2024\, for the webinar series “Incorporating Climate and Environmental Justice into Research and Resource Management.” REGISTER HERE! \nIn this series\, speakers will explore the ethics of engaging with the populations most vulnerable to the impacts of environmental and climate change\, which are often low-income communities\, communities of color\, Indigenous and Tribal communities\, and people experiencing disenfranchisement. They hope the series will be of particular value to researchers looking to apply justice principles to their own work and communities seeking to lay out clear expectations for the researchers they collaborate with. Webinars will be recorded\, transcribed\, and made available on the NCASC website a few weeks after the live event. \nLearn more about the series on the NCASC website: https://www.usgs.gov/webinar-series-incorporating-climate-and-environmental-justice-research-and-resource-management

SUMMARY:Webinar: Updates to the Bay Act Resiliency Guidance
DESCRIPTION:The Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act (Bay Act) and accompanying Regulations were amended to address resiliency in the performance criteria required to be implemented by the 84 Tidewater localities under the Bay Act. An informal comment on the proposed guidance was previously held in December of 2022. \nThe draft guidance has been updated based upon comments received during the prior informal comments period\, in particular revisions to accompanying examples. Additionally\, a model ordinance\, a locality implementation checklist\, a resiliency assessment template\, an adaptation measure checklist\, and a list of nature-based adaptation measures have been developed. \nPrior to finalizing the guidance and these additional documents\, DEQ is providing for an informal comment period opportunity. \nThe informal comment period is from March 19\, 2024\, to May 3\, 2024. Any comments should be submitted to Heather.Mackey@deq.virginia.gov and include name\, organization represented (if any)\, mailing address and/or email address. \nAdditionally\, a webinar co-hosted with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science is being held on April 3rd at 10:00 a.m to provide an overview of the updates\, additional documents\, and AdaptVa model for use in resiliency assessments. For additional information about the webinar\, please contact Heather.Mackey@deq.virginia.gov.
