SUMMARY:Grasses\, Sedges and Rushes
DESCRIPTION:Identification of grasses\, sedges and rushes is often perceived as one of the most difficult activities in the realm of botany. This is due to many factors\, the most prominent of which are that grasses\, sedges\, and rushes (i.e.\, “the graminoids”) are usually small\, narrow-leaved plants with unassuming\, diminutive flowers – and they all look alike! Even more disconcerting\, the “language” surrounding graminoid botany seems like an insurmountable pile of un-pronounceable Latin words with no end in sight. This course with Dr. Douglas DeBerry is for the disgruntled multitudes who would like to gain a better understanding of grass\, sedge and rush terminology\, classification\, nomenclature and most importantly\, identification. In addition\, those already proficient in plant identification will find this course to be a useful refresher. Emphasis is on native or naturalized species in Virginia\, and the use of dichotomous keys in technical plant manuals and regional floras. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Protecting the Rappahannock River
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Virginia and Brent Hunsinger from Friends of the Rappahannock on July 17th at 7pm EST for an informative webinar! \nThe Rappahannock River was named one of the Most Endangered Rivers of 2025 by American Rivers. The Rappahannock River is under threat as groundwater supplies decline and demand for surface water grows from industrial and residential usage. \nIn this session we will hear how partners are coming together to protect the river as increased strain on water resources and the absence of unified water management threaten the river’s ability to meet the needs of both people and nature. \nBrent Hunsinger serves as Advocacy and Coastal Programs Director at Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR). He has worked at FOR for 9 years and manages state/local policy and restoration/outreach programs in the tidal region (Fredericksburg to the Chesapeake Bay). In his free time he enjoys roaming the forests and wetlands (especially in winter) and fishing for striped bass. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:DEQ Education Series: Chesapeake Bay Protection & Restoration
DESCRIPTION:The Chesapeake Bay is where the fresh waters of the Potomac\, Rappahannock\, York and James Rivers (along with other tributaries\, creeks\, and streams) meet the ocean to create the largest estuary in the U.S. These brackish waters are home to unique plant and animal communities\, and the Bay was once the most productive estuary in the country. However\, chronic water quality issues in the Bay have negatively impacted these aquatic resources\, fueling the creation of a multi-state effort to preserve the Chesapeake Bay. With a watershed that extends into six different states and the District of Columbia\, the historic\, cultural\, and economic importance of the Bay cannot be understated – and Virginia has a large role to play in its recovery. \nJoin us for a free webinar on Tuesday\, June 10th\, from 6:30pm-8pm\, to learn about the activities the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) engages in to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay. During the presentation\, DEQ staff will discuss the Commonwealth’s participation in the Chesapeake Bay Program\, how the agency implements monitoring activities\, and the activities DEQ regulates under the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act. Each of these efforts relies on the support and engagement of all stakeholders in Virginia – this means you! Use the link below to register for this virtual presentation and learn more about how we can protect the Bay together.

SUMMARY:VIMS After Hours: Searching for Sturgeon
DESCRIPTION:Technological advances are revolutionizing the field of marine science\, as well as efforts to conserve and protect aquatic species. Environmental DNA (or e-DNA) is genetic material left behind by organisms in their environment (from the shedding of cells\, mucus\, feces\, skin\, scales\, or hair)\, and can be used to detect invasive and/or endangered species\, monitor biodiversity\, and assess the health of ecosystems. \nDr. Angelina Dichiera\, Assistant Professor at William & Mary’s Batten School & VIMS\, will explain how eDNA can be used to detect and monitor the presence of endangered sturgeon in Bay tributaries\, and help guide the recovery and conservation of these incredible “living fossils.” \nLearn more and register here!

SUMMARY:VIMS After Hours: Beautiful Swimmers: Blue Crabs in Chesapeake Bay!
DESCRIPTION:Since 1990\, researchers at the Batten School & VIMS have partnered with the Fisheries Service of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to operate the annual Bay-wide Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey. This survey has allowed them to estimate the total population of blue crabs throughout Chesapeake Bay\, identify year-to-year trends in abundance\, and assess the effects of the blue crab fishery (both before and after management actions were implemented in 2008 to address stresses to the blue crab population in previous decades). Dr. Rom Lipcius\, Professor at the Batten School & VIMS\, will provide attendees with a look at the history and future of blue crabs in the Chesapeake Bay. Learn more and register here!

SUMMARY:Connecting Communities Through Water
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, a Polynesian voyaging canoe called Hōkūleʻa set out to circumnavigate the Pacific Ocean and uncover\, recover\, and reclaim culture\, traditions\, and a deeper relationship with Earth. The purpose of the voyage was to develop young leaders and connect communities with our oceans\, science\, and indigenous wisdom. As our speaker Nainoa Thompson said\, “the ocean doesn’t separate us—it connects us\,” a sentiment that is also relevant in the Chesapeake Bay region. \nJoin Chesapeake Research Consotirum on Wednesday\, December 18th\, from 12-1 pm to hear inspiring stories from communities and the open water. Watch this video recapping the 2023 journey\, the video “The Way of the Navigator”\, or scroll the StoryMap to learn more. Register and learn more here.
