SUMMARY:PFAS in Virginia's Waters: What you Need to Know!
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Virginia for a program discussing serious pollution of state waters and dire threats to Virginians from PFAS\, a class of pollutants designated as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Because of enormous concentrations of PFAS in various species of fish in the Chickahominy River watershed\, the Virginia Department of Health finally issued a formal consumption advisory in early May\, after a long and unnecessary delay. In fact\, VDH and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) warned that sensitive populations not eat fish taken from these waters in 2022\, but then failed to take necessary actions to inform and protect the public. \n  \nIn this program\, we will describe the PFAS contamination in the Chickahominy\, in both water and fish and the regulatory steps DEQ must take now to ensure that people and wildlife are protected from serious harm. Similar threats exist in other waters around the state and we must address them now\, before our drinking water supplies and food are contaminated further. We know some permitted discharges and land application fo sewage sludge making uncontrolled releases of PFAS to the environment. \n  \nPFAS are associated with a wide range of health problems\, including cancers\, developmental disorders\, and others. Wild Virginia has been insisting for several years that state officials take forceful action to address PFAS threats. DEQ has not only failed to do so\, it has not fully informed the public. Wild Virginia has reviewed thousands of pieces of data and will report on those findings where the state has failed. \n  \nRegister here!

DESCRIPTION:August is peak season for cyanobacteria blooms in Maryland—and we’re diving into the science behind them with one of the state’s leading experts. Join Cathy Wazniak\, Environmental Program Manager with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources\, as she unpacks the fascinating (and sometimes frightening) world of algae. \nWe’ll explore: \n\nWhat causes toxic cyanobacteria blooms and why August is prime bloom time\nA snapshot of phytoplankton biodiversity\, the good\, the bad\, and the slimy\nHow harmful algae blooms (HABs) affect coastal waters\, ecosystems\, and public health\nMonitoring strategies and the role of citizen science in tracking water quality\n\nCathy has coordinated Maryland’s phytoplankton and HAB monitoring programs for nearly three decades and chairs the Maryland Harmful Algae Bloom Taskforce. This is a rare opportunity to learn directly from someone working at the intersection of science\, policy\, and coastal stewardship. \nCathy Wazniak is an Environmental Program Manager for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. She is the head of the Integrated Assessment program in the Division of Tidewater Ecosystem Assessment. Her responsibilities include coordinating Maryland’s phytoplankton and harmful algal bloom monitoring programs as well as Maryland Coastal Bays and offshore water quality monitoring and assessments. She earned her master’s degree with UMD Marine Estuarine and Environmental Sciences program where she studied community metabolism. She was a Sea Grant Knauss Fellow under the Assistant Secretary of the Navy Office for Installations and the Environment. She is the chair of the Maryland Harmful Algae Bloom Taskforce as well as a member of the Maryland Coastal Bays National Estuary Program scientific and technical advisory and Chesapeake Bay Program modeling committees. She also serves on the EPA National\nAquatic Resources Survey (NARS) Steering Committee and National Coastal Condition Assessment Steering Committee\, the National Benthic HAB workgroup\, the NASA led Chesapeake Interagency Satellite workgroup\, Chesapeake Bay SAV Committee as well as the\nEast Coast SAV cooperative. She has worked for the Department since 1996. During her tenure she has co-authored many reports and peer reviewed articles on the coastal bays ecosystem and harmful algae in Maryland. \n  \nRegister here!
